I believe that Elie Weisel begins Night with the story of Moshe the Beadle because he feels a certain kinship with both the trials and adversity the man was forced to face, and also with the need to tell his story to others. Weisel claims in the preface that it is his responsibility as a survivor of the holocaust to share his tail with the rest of the world. That, in allowing the horror of the holocaust to be erased from history textbooks in the future, the enemy will have gotten away with their crimes. Moshe claims on page 7, "I succeeded in coming back...I no longer care to live..But I wanted to come back to warn you." This quote shows Moshe's desire to spread his story so that others may learn from it. In the story, no one listened to Moshe. Weisel hopes that, in writing the book with Moshe's story included, people will listen to him and learn from his experiences.

Elie Weisel writes Night in the first person because it is his story. Weisel wants show that the story is not just made up, but actually his experiences. By writing in first person, the reader feels as if Weisel is personally telling them about his life and a sense of urgency is also conveyed. If Night was written in the third person, it would feel as though the story was passed down and the events occurred a long time ago, even though the Holocaust happened not too long ago. The reader would also lose the sense of urgency and recentness of the story. Weisel's use of the first person also portrays his emotions much clearer than if the book was written in third person. Reading the novel in first person allows one to feel Weisel's pain and to understand his story much better than if Weisel wrote in third person.

I think that Elie Wiesel chose to write his story in the first person so that his readers will have a deeper understanding of what he experienced during the course of his story. By telling his story in the first person we are able to get a more real sense of what actually happened. If he had written his story in the third person the things that he experiences in his story would be much more widespread and general. That would call for a much less intimate and personal book. His story would have less to do with just him and more to do with the thousands of other people who suffered through the same things as he did. Writing in the first person allows us to really understand the things that were going through his mind at each point in time and also to see how his horrible experiences changed him for better or for worse.

Elie Wiesel writes Night in the first person b/c it makes his experiences 10 times more real and extreme than if he had written in the third person. It also separates his writing from just a history account of what happened that is strictly facts and no emotion. This writing will make the reader sympathize for the people involved, but will probably be forgotten about only minutes later. The writing in the the 1st person, however, makes the reader stop and think, wow this unimaginably horrible stuff really did happen to someone, and not just one person, thousands of people. Only an account written in the 1st person can really tell you exactly how it felt to be going through that time and not just a guess based on well researched facts.

I think that Elie Weisel began Night with the story of Moishe the Beadle because Moishe is significant to the Holocaust, and what Elie had experienced. Night showed how Moishe had changed after being taken, and how he was treated after he returned. Moishe tried to convince the Jews of Sighet to move, because he knew something bad would happen if they stayed. If Elie or his father, or anyone had listened to Moishe, they would have had a larger chance of being spared the discrimination, and the horror that so many had to go through. Elie admits that he himself did not believe Moishe. Elie's writing about this could convince people to listen to others if a terrible thing like the Holocaust ever happens again.

By writing his novel in the first person, Elie Weisel is able to retell his memories as if they were happening before his eyes again. This writing technique allows the readers to see his raw and uncensored thoughts, feelings, and ideas about the difficult times. Because his audience was not living through this time, he is trying his best to capture and depict his experiences again, trying to bring the reader along his journey with him. This makes the novel not only much more personal for Weisel, but also for its audience. Writing in the first person captures the fear of the issues and makes the reader feel as though he or she is experiencing them as well. If the novel was written in the third person, it would lose the personal and unbearably real touches that it has. The sorrow and terror that Weisel brings to life could not be retold through the third person with the same intensity.

I believe that Elie Wiesel writes "Night" in the first person, because it is his direct reference to the events he witnesses. The first person captures Wiesel's hardships with his families, friends and strangers. This connection gives the reader a more emotional, personal and detailed view of the time. This step allows the reader more time to focus on the emotion of the scene rather than the setting of the story. If written in the third person, the record of Wiesel's encounters wouldn't seem as authentic and genuine as it is. This would bring Wiesel to a restricted amount of freedom when portraying his emotion.

I assume that Elie Weisel starts off Night with the story of Moshe the Beadle because it is an emotional story about the beginning of the Holocaust and it really sets the mood for the rest of the book. Also, Moshe the Beadle must have been a significant figure in Elie Weisel's life. Weisel is trying to teach the reader a lesson, in some cases you should go along with the people you trust. Weisel trusted Moshe the Beadle but still did not follow his advice to leave his town. I think that Weisel wants to pass on the story of Moshe the Beadle to never be forgotten, as well as the Holocaust.

Elie Weisel writes "Night" in the first person because it gives the reader a stronger sense of what is going on. It seems as though the events are happening as he is writing the book. It would be different if he wrote the book in third person because it would seem like he might not know all of the facts. Also by writing the story in first person gives the reader the feeling of the pain and suffering Weisel goes through. It feels like Weisel is telling the book right to the reader. I think the book is much stronger because it is told in first person.

In the opening of "Night," Elie Wiesel focuses on the story of Moshe the Beadle in order to demonstrate more clearly the transformation Jews underwent throughout the Holocaust as a result of the horrific brutalities they witnessed. Moshe's story foreshadows Wiesel's, and conveys an increased sense of urgency and disbelief, as the reader is forced to witness silently the Jews' refusal to act in order to save themselves. If Wiesel were merely to have described what happened to Moshe, rather than vividly depicting the mental change in the man, one would not be as acutely apprehensive for Wiesel, or understand as accurately the emotions of Holocaust survivors. Wiesel also uses Moshe the Beadle to illustrate the contrast between a Jew before and after surviving the Holocaust. The reader witnesses first hand Moshe's metamorphosis from a profound believer and mentor, to a man whose urgent warnings - his only reason to continue living - are ignored. At the outset of the Holocaust, young Elie Wiesel was even more oblivious to the realities surrounding him, and secluded in his studies. The reader senses that the transformation Wiesel will be forced to undergo will result in an even greater contrast to his former life than Moshe the Beadle's.

Elie Weisel writes Night in the first person because it gives people a better understanding of the book and where it came from. Writing in the first person makes the book more personal and gives people a better understanding of what he went through. If Elie Weisel did not write Night in the first person people would not feel the same connection that they feel when the reading the book in the first person. If the book was written in the third person it would not feel like it was his story. It would seem as though he was just narrating the story and did not actually have to experience any of what happened. Because Elie Weisel actually experienced it all first hand, he is able to communicate the emotions and hardships that he faced to the readers.

Elie Wiesel begins the Night with the story of Moshe the Beadle to show the revolution of feelings that the Jews felt involving the Germans. Moshe the Beadle had a unique experience, he was taken from his home by force, but was able to return to it. Moshe the Beadle knew what was happening and that's why he felt a sense of duty to tell everyone, but the Jews refused to listen to the truth. They could not imagine something that horrific and terrific every happening to anyone, let alone themselves, unfortunately, they learned the sad truth soon enough. Also, Wiesel demonstrates to the reader what happens to someone as they go through the Holocaust, their whole mental state of being completely transforms to someone who has been cursed with the image of death floating in his mind. This gives Elie Wiesel's Night a first hand description of the horror that a person faces during this horrible time.

Elie Weisel narrates his autobiography Night in the first person because it makes for a more touching, real book. If he were to write the story in the third person, there would be less emotion coming through. Night seems more real in the first person because in this way, Weisel can portray to his audience exactly how scary every step of his journey was. Every emotion that ran through his mind can be thoroughly perceived by the reader, and thus the reader can more clearly understand the effects of the Holocaust and what it was to be a part of this mass murdering.

I believe that Elie Wiesel started his most famous memoir, Night with the story of Moishe the Beadle because it tells something about his people, the Jewish people of Sighet. Even up to the last moment they were all smiles and optimism. In there opinion, they had been living in Sighet for generations and nothing could bring them in harm's way. They hoped for the best, but didn't prepare for the worst. When Moishe the Beadle returned to tell his family, friends and nieghbours to start preparing for the worst, the Jews of Sighet heard his words, but didn't listen to there meaning. Elie Wiesel retells Moishe's story and as he reflects on the past, one can tell he finally grasps the full and powerful empathy behind Moishe the Beadle's words.

I think that Elie wirtes his story in the first person because he wants the readers to get a much more intimate understanding of what happened to him. If he had written his novel in the third person we probably wouldn't get to really know Elie's family and thier dynamics. We wouldn't really know many personal touches about Elie and therefore we wouldn't really be able to understand the pain and grief that he will eventually experience. By writing in the first person the readers care about Elie and Elie's family only. If written in the third person his welfare wouldn't be the main concern of the audience.

Wiesel writes his memoir, Night, in first person so as to allow the reader to feel the emotions that he himself felt as he experienced the Holocaust. His story becomes more of a diary–an intimate record of his own personal feelings and experiences–and less of an account of history. This way the reader can empathize on a personal level with Wiesel. As opposed to recalling the story from a less personal and more objective perspective, he recounts his tribulations through both thoughts and events. If the memoir had been written in third person, we would be restricted in the sense that it would be impossible to enter Wiesel's own thoughts. Because Night is written in first person, we are fully immersed in his world and we can feel and experience his fear, apprehension, distress, hopelessness, sadness, etc. with our own senses.

I believe that Weisel begins Night with the story of Moishe the Beadle because it sets the mood of the story. It is the first episode of what is yet to come later on. Moishe is the first real life experience that the narrator faces. Moishe is the first person that he feels close to, and he gets that taken away from him when Moishe is forced to leave the community. Weisel probably feels that this story needed to be told first because Moishe is the survivor of the first part of the war and clearly that is very significant. Elie Wiesel also probably felt that he would share this becuase the experience Moishe had to go through took the joy out of him. When he returns, he no longer sings, there was no joy in him, and he wasnt as religious anymore. "Life? I can no longer care to live. I am alone." (pg.7) It was clearly devastating for the author, therefore he decided to share it first.

Having Elie Wiesel write Night in first person makes it more powerful then it already is. Knowing that he personally experienced it makes it stronger. Also I think that the reason the books starts with Moishe the Beadle because, at first you think he is just a friend or someone that was being helpful. But, after he returns from being taken away he tries to warn the people, but the people just try and tune him out. They thought he was going mad, or trying to attract attention. Little did they know he was actually helping them prepare for the worst experiences of their life. Also, Moishe the Beadle foreshadows danger in the beginning. "Moishe the Beadle came running to our house. 'I warned you,' He shouted. And left without waiting for a response." Page 10. When this is said, the reader thinks something bad is going to happen. Having started the book with Moishe the Beadle, helps start the long tale of Elie Wiesel.

I think Elie Wiesel begins Night with the story of Moshe the Beadle, because he wants to show the audience how a kind man like Moshe changes after seeing what was done. He wants to show the reader the effect of what is to come in the future of the novel. This gives foreshadowing of the great adversities that Elie has to face in the future, and it prepares the reader.

The story of Moishe the Beadle is a set up for Elie's test of faith throughout the rest of the novel. Moishe was Elie's teacher and friend. He thought that Moishe was going to "help [him] enter eternity, into that time where question and answer become ONE." (5) Yet, when Moishe told Elie his story, Elie didn't believe him. In fact, Elie pitied Moishe, believing that he had gone mad. But it is not the test of Elie's faith in humanity that the story of Moishe the Beadle is meant to set up, but Elie's faith in God. Elie's whole life was centered around praying, becoming a Kabbalist, and understanding God. Moishe told Elie "Man comes closer to god through the questions he asks Him...but we don't understand the answers...because they dwell in the depths of our souls and remain there until we die. The real answers, Eliezer, you will find only within yourself." (5) When Elie goes to Auschwitz it will become the ultimate test of his faith. This quote alone sets up what could become Elie's biggest question: Why is this happening? Will Elie have enough faith to look for that answer within God? or will he look inside himself?

Elie Wiesel writes his autobiography Night in the first person foremost to convey the strong emotions related to the topic of the Holocaust. If the story was told in the third person there would not be the same emotion as there is now. When I read the first chapter I felt like I really connected with Wiesel's character, and felt what he was feeling. If the book was written in the third person it would be a lot less personal and not have the same effect. The first person aspect of the book makes the message so much stonger. It really explains exactly what it was like to live in the time of the Holocaust, something a fictional book or history text book would not do as well. On the condition that Night was not written in the first person, a lot of the meaning and real feeling in the book would be lost. The pain and suffering of the Holocaust is grasped so much better because the book is written in the first person.

I believe that Elie Wiesel begins his novel Night with the story of Moishe the Beadle to tell the readers of the horrible fate that could have been avoided if the people of Sighet listened to the horrifying words of this humble character. At first, Moishe is depicted as a friend to all of Sighet, someone who is not necessarily respected, but who is liked by all. When Moishe returns from his transportation, there is a tangible difference in him, in that he has truly experienced the atrocities of the war. In his transportation, Moishe saw what was happening to people outside of the small city of Sighet, and selflessly wants to warn others of their fate. People take his words as a grasp for attention, which therefore seals their fate later in the novel. It may be that later in his life, Elie Wiesel realized how wrong he and his community members were in assuming that Moishe was lying, and all of those people were no doubt very sorry that they never listened to the once so unbelievable words of humble Moishe the Beadle.

I think Elie Weisel starts Night off with the story of Moishe the Beadle because Moishe was important to him. Wiesel felt close to Moishe, and Moishe felt close to him. They were friends, and Wiesel thinks that it is important to show people the friendship with someone that risked his life to help others. I think that Wiesel was so impressed by his courage and strength that he thought it was unacceptable to leave out. Also, because nobody listens to Moishe, I think Wiesel wants to push the point that nobody listened to him in the story so people realize what was going through the citizens of Singet's minds. When Moishe comes to warn everyone, they think he is insane. They thought he went mad because they could not imagine that kind of thing happening. The thought of people hating each other enough to kill them was unbelievable to them. That is why Weisel started and included the story of Moishe, to show everyone that people couldn't even imagine that happening, because of how sad and tragic the concept was, enhancing the emotion and feeling of the story.

Elie Weisel might have written "Night" in the first person to heighten the dramatic effect. If a person were to tell me a story, that they themselves experienced I would be able to connect better with his or her situation. Though if someone was telling me a story about someone else, neither me nor the person telling it would have a direct connection to their experience and feelings. When Weisle talks about the trials of his family and town, you put yourself in that moment, and you can truly grasp the emotions that he was experiencing. If Weisle were to write in third person, about a subject as excruciating as the Holocaust, you might think that some of the details have been changed or fabricated because they are so horrific and unimaginable.

I think that Eli Wiesel began Night with the story of Moshe the Beadle to heighten the tragedy of the disbelief of the people of Sighet, and their lost opportunity to be saved. When Moshe, a quite yet respected Beadle, returns from witnessing a slaughter by Germans to warn the people of Sighet, the members of the community refuse to believe him. If they had listened, if they had put their faith in him, they may have escape. The tragedy is this inability of human’s to believe, when it truly counts, what has been deemed impossible but is reality. Possibly, they could save themselves by trusting another, or in this case Moshe the Beadle, who has given them no reason for distrust. However, the people of Sighet cannot, and instead they fill their mouths with words such as perhaps, miracle, and maybe. However, we cannot even attempt to single out this community—throughout history the lost opportunity of freedom from the great lack of belief has been present. Eli Wiesel, by introducing Moshe the Beadle and his strife in the beginning, is demonstrating this fault of human’s. As the army begins to set their decrees to the Jews and the punishment of death for disobeying, Moshe the Beadle runs to Eli’s father and exclaims, “I warned you,” [8] but even then, there is no attempt to escape—still they do not believe the gravity of their future. Only when it is occurring, do they understand, but by that point, it is too late.

I think Elie Wiesel chose to write in the first person instead of the third person for many reasons. By writing in the first person, Wiesel allows the reader to interpret the story more personally and intensely. While reading, I felt the story was more real and powerful with the first person. In textbooks, when historians write fact after fact about these tragic realities ones feels sad, but can’t relate to what actually happened. However, by reliving these events with a person who was there, allows one to feel every emotion and hardship that occurred during this time in history.

Anonymous said...

I believe Elie Wiesel tells his story in the first person perspective because it makes the story much more personal, and much more emotional for the reader. Hearing a story through a person that actually experienced, not just a character, allows for a deeper understanding of the horrific events that occurred, not just the actions of one that experienced it. The use of the first person allows for Wiesel to express his feelings at the time, allowing for the reader to feel his pain with him. By writing in the first person, Wiesel undoubtedly had to force himself to come to terms with his past, something that could have been avoided had he chosen to hide these emotions behind the third person. This "coming to terms with his past" allowed for Wiesel to retell the story with greater detail, greater emotion, and, obviously, greater truth and honesty. Had Night been written in the third person, the characters would all seem more distant, who;e with the first person, the reader truly walks a mile in the narrator's shoes. The first person tense allows for a truly deep understanding of not only the narrator, but also those around him and why they make the decisions they do.

By writing “Night” in the first person, Elie Wiesel is able to relay his experiences to the audience so that his adversities and fear are palpable. In this way the sense of urgency tangible during the Holocaust is relived through Wiesel's tales. By utilizing this writing technique Wiesel can not only relive the journey himself, but can share the experience and knowledge with people who did not face life as he did. By reading the account of a Holocaust survivor, the audience is better able realize and educate themselves of the pain and suffering that occurred. The story is written in a way that is personal to both Wiesel and the audience and by writing the novel as if it were happening again it gives the author more freedom to relay his life as a Jew during the Holocaust because he is able to unveil his raw and true thoughts and feelings. By writing the novel this way it separates emotion from strictly history and facts and the reader can relate easier to specifically one person within a regular family than to millions of strangers. If he were to rewrite the story in the third person the novel would lose its power and real quality and the Holocaust would seem distant and unimportant to life today, although it occurred not yet a lifetime ago. The clear emotion and understanding sought by Wiesel would be lost if the book was written in the third person. The book would become less intimate and personal and the novel would not be as authentic and genuine.

Elie Wiesel begins the book with the anecdote of Moishe the Beadle, which foreshadows Wiesel’s journey and illustrates the evolution of character. The experiences of Moishe correlated to those of Elie Wiesel, as they both felt a responsibility to convey their story to the rest of the world. Despite Moishe’s desperate attempts to warn everyone of their terrible fate, people choose to ignore him as they continue in a delusional world. In the beginning, as Elie Wiesel mentions in the preface, few wanted to hear his story, preferring to spare future generations of the brutal truth. Elie Wiesel also uses the example of Moishe the Beadle to portray the evolution of a character after he has been given the burden of handling the truth. Moishe is no longer described as the same, wide, dreamy-eyed character, instead he appears hunched, a tangible portrayal of the weight of the pain and suffering that he had seen and experienced. His only reason for surviving, to warn his community, has been ignored, Moishe is left an outcast trying to break through the walls of a secluded world - his Jewish community. The reader gets the sense that Elie Wiesel, who at the time was encompassed in a surreal world, will share that same fate as Moishe the Beadle.

The first person usage in "Night" allows for a more intimate relationship between Elie Weisel and the reader. The reader is able to understand Weisel at a more emotional level because his thoughts are expressed exactly how he thinks them, rather than described dully in third person. The connection between the reader and the narrator is especially important in "Night" because of the intensity and harsh reality that it portrays. The Holocaust was a real, serious event that requires understanding of the background and the lifestyle of those who were victimized. The detail of Weisel's first person writing almost forces the reader to imagine him or herself walking right next to him as he endured the hardships of the Holocaust, versus watching him from afar, where third person writing would have placed the reader. First person shows the reality of Weisel's experiences, for nothing he says in "Night" is false, and that genuine sincerity is apparent to the reader with every turn of the page. Most importantly, Weisel writes from his heart, guaranteeing the reader a deeper experience of "Night" and a true understanding of the Holocaust.

I think Elie Weisel wrote Night in first person because it makes the events more real. You can feel the fear coming out of Elie and off the page. It makes me feel that what happened in the Hallocaust was not just stories that i have repeatedly heard, it happened to someone i "know". It also makes the story a lot more personal. If Night were written in third person, the story would not feel as real. It would just feel like a story that has been passed down from generation to generation as so many Holocaust stories are. Weisel writes Night in first person to not just make it a story, but to make the terrible things that happened not so long ago, come into our hearts and minds, and make us understand.

I think that Elie Weisel writes Night in the first person in order to make it more personal and believable. Because Elie Weisel is telling you the story from his perspective, you feel the same emotions that he once did while you read the memoir. Weisel's perspective captures the intensity of the painful moments, and the reader is able to understand that because it is in first person. It feels as though the reader is experiencing the same exact things that Elie Weisel did, and that would not be possible if it was in third person. The novel would seem much more distant if it was written in third person, and would not captivate the reader. It would not be as believable because it would not be from a direct point of view. The reader would not understand the horribleness of the events, which is what Weisel feared when writing this book. As he said in the preface, he wanted the reader to actually be able to understand how awful it was. He succeeds in showing the real experience through using first person.

I believe that Elie Wiesel tells his story in first person because it aids his purpose of writing Night. For Wiesel, his novel served as a testimony to his brutal experience, the palpable proof of “a witness who believes he was a moral obligation to try to prevent the enemy form enjoying one last victory by allowing his crimes to be erased from human memory.”(viii) His novel serves as solid evidence to open the eyes of the ignorant, so that the “enemy” cannot win once again, when generations afterward have forgotten and may let such turmoil happen again. He conveys his purpose again to the reader metaphorically in the first chapter with the memory of the Moishe the Beadle. Hinting that Moishe’s knowledge from being deported would soon be given to Wiesel’s younger self. In other words, the shift of Moishe’s frustration onto Wiesel; the aggravation that the Beadle felt when he tried to warn his town’s people, as if he was trying to stuff a hand into an already knit glove and finding the hand stubborn to knit its own. Had Wiesel written Night in third person, I believe that the evidence and pain he wishes to convey and seed in the reader’s heart would seem far more distant and less powerful than its profound weight when told in first person.

Elie Wiesel begins his tragic memoir with a story about Moishe the Beadle to portray the importance of trust and to create foreshadowing suspense leading up to his own horrifying experience. Elie and Moishe the Beadle develop a strong, appreciative bond for one another throughout their studies of the Hebrew bible. They trust each other completely with the questions they ask and the answers they receive. However, when Moishe the Beadle miraculously returns, and tries to spread his sordid news as a warning for those he cares about, no one–not even Elie–believes him. This broken trust causes Elie, his family, and his friends to suffer and experience the face of death in ways one could not imagine. There is an awful sense of dramatic irony hidden behind Wiesel's words–the readers already know the story of the Holocaust, which allows us to believe that Moishe the Beadle's story was completely true. At this point in the novel, Wiesel does not have the ability to believe such a terrible thing, so just like most of the other Jews of Sighet, he tries to remain optimistic. We, the readers, know the fate that these innocent people will unfortunately face, so Wiesel lures us in by using Moishe the Beadle's experience as a foreshadow of his own.

1. Elie Wiesel begins Night with the tale of Moshe the Beadle to stress the importance of the novel. The unbelief of Moshe’s story shows just how crucial it is to believe Wiesel’s. After Moshe the Beadle escaped from the Gestapo, he “went from one Jewish house to the next, telling his story,” (7). He tells Wiesel that he wanted “to return to Sighet to describe to you my death so that you might ready yourselves while there is still time…I wanted to come back to warn you…,”(7). The purpose of his story was to spread awareness of the Gestapo, and to prevent anyone else from being captured and enslaved like he had. Unfortunately, “people not only refused to believe his tales, they refused to listen,” (7), and his story was unsuccessful. Had the Jews listened to Moshe the Beadle and believed his stories, they might have had time to escape the cruelties of Jewish imprisonment. By beginning Night with this story, Wiesel is proving the point that because no one listened to Moshe, disaster occurred. If humans continue to only hear what they want to hear, and not listen to the tragedies of Wiesel and other survivors, the enemy will be allowed a "victory by allowing his crimes to be erased from human memory,” (viii). Just as Wiesel has a “moral obligation…[to] bear witness,” (viii), we have a moral obligation to read his story, and most importantly, to believe it.

Elie Weisel begins Night with the story of Moshe the Beadle, in my opinion, to show the readers how his whole experience of the Holocaust could have been stopped if the town of Sighet had just believed Moshe. The story of Moshe the Beadle is essentially the starting point of Weisel's Holocaust experience. As a boy, Weisel looked up to Moshe because of his superiority in the Jewish community of Sighet. Elie Weisel had always been interested in Jewish studies, and Moshe was the only one that listened and helped him. Therefore, when no one believes Moshe's story, Weisel may look back on that day and feel badly that he didn't trust the word of a religious man whom he had looked up to. When he comes back, Moshe tells Elie Weisel, "I have been saved miraculously. I managed to get back here. Where did I get the strength from? I wanted to come back to Sighet...so that you could prepare yourselves while there is still time" (5). Moshe the Beadle is referring to God when he asks where he got the strength from. He is trying to prove to Weisel and Sighet that this is a message from God. Weisel uses Moshe's story to show that if it hadn't been for God, Moshe would not have been able to live, just as Weisel might not have been alive to tell his experience and the realities of the Holocaust in Night.

I believe that Elie Weisel writes "Night" in the first person because it makes his story stronger and more effective. The reader is able to understand exactly how he was feeling at at all times throughout the book and, although most readers haven't gone through such a tragic experience as this one, one can relate to his emotions easier. By writing in the first person, one also sees only through the narrator's eyes, which makes Weisel's story more personal and somewhat easier to interpret. If the story were in the third person, it would be much harder for the reader to understand exactly what was going through the minds of the people in Sighet during this time. The emotions would seem much more general, but with the memoir in first person one can believe more in an easier sense. The intense and extreme feelings that Weisel and his family experienced could never be explained in the third person with the same true passion as it is in the first person.

I think Elie Wiesel tells his story in the first person perspective because it makes the story more engaging and intense. To know that someone was actually put in the same position Wiesel was put in is terrifying, yet makes the story that much more intriguing. If the story was written in the third person, I feel it would be lost. Anyone could make up a story, whether it is fictional, historical fiction, or science-fiction. However, when an author writes a story about their own life experiences, I feel it brings more to the story. There are many books about the Holocaust, but not many of them are written about themselves. There are such few people to this day that are able to write about an experience such as the one of Elie Wiesel. Being able to write his own story about his experiences brings thoughts and emotion to the reader, which is much different than just hearing the facts. Being that Elie Wiesel is one of very few that were able to survive through the Holocaust, I feel it was very important that he was able to share his story in his own words.

Anonymous said...

Elie Weisel begins Night with the story of Moshe the Beadle because Moshe represents the future of the Jews in the course of Hitler's reign and forshadows their suffering because of their doubts of German strength. Moshe the Beadle is like Weisel, in that he has survived inhumanity, and wishes to warn and share his story to the Jews of Sighet, prospective victms. Moshe was unsuccessful because the Jews refused to listen. Weisel is in the same position as Moshe through his writing of Night, not only because they both have had hopes of sharing their experience in order to spread understanding, but because their words and urgency to create awareness among bystanders has come from personal change as a result of the Holocaust.

I think that Elie Weisel uses the first person verses the third person because she wants to make the reader feel as if she/he is actually there and experiencing these events. Weisel wants to make sure that reader feel a part of the story and wants the reader to cleary understand and visualize the events. If Weisel wrote in the third person that would alter the story a lot because it would make it less dramatic. Finally, Weisel want her story to be relatable and she wants her story to truly effect people. Weisel wants her readers to understand the harsh times that happened.

Anonymous said...

Elie Weisel writes Night in the first person because he is telling the story about himself. If you listen to the story in the first place it makes the story so much more real and you really get to experience what the author is writing about. It helps the reader really get into the book and understand what the author was going through when the book was written. Many people think that the Holocaust was fake, but in the first person its more believeable. There is nothing to lie about because he is telling the story about his life.

Anonymous said...

In my opinion, Elie Weisel wrote "Night" in first person to really show the reader how tragic his tale was. By telling his story in first person, the reader is able to truly capture the true meaning of the story and really connect with what Weisel is thinking. He wants to show the reader how intense his story is. By writing in the first person, his emotions and experiences are more thoroughly conveyed through his words. If Weisel had written his novel in the third person, it would have seemed much more general and less emotional. If written in the third person, the reader would not feel as connected with Weisel's experiences that he writes about in his memoir. By recounting his tale through the first person, Weisel is truly able to communicate the sorrow and terror of his story.

Anonymous said...

I think that Elie Weisel wrote Night in the first person rather than the third person because it is his own personal life and story he is telling. If he were to write it in the third person, it would be like telling the story of another or of a made up character. This is such a tradgic and meaningful experience, that i think he feels it is important to really show what happened by telling exactly what happened to him. By writing it in first person he allows the reader to see a more personal, real, and direct account of the story. This way readers can really understand what happened and how terrible and important it was, because they are seing it straight through the eyes of the author himself. The first person also allows the reader to relate to Weisel, so that they will get a deeper sence of the time than if they were just trying to understand such a monumental event by reading what some made up character might have experienced.

Anonymous said...

I think Elie Weisel uses the first person in his book, Night, because it helps the reader feel like she is in the story. The writing technique of the first person allows the reader to be more entranced in the story. Personally, I felt more in the moment when the story was told in the first person.
If the story had been written in the third person it would not have the same effect on the reader. The story would seem less personal and less like a true story. The first person helped Weisel make the story even more true than what it would have been.
In all, the fact that the story was written in the first person helped the story greatly. The whole story is very good because it was written in the first person.

Anonymous said...

I think that Elie Weisel wrote his memoir, Night, in first person to make his story more personal. The reader is able to see his perspective through his thoughts and memories. The reader is really able to understand where Weisel is coming from and connect with his story. If it was written in third person, that personal aspect of the book would be reduced and make Night not as unique.

Anonymous said...

In order to convey his account with force, Eli Wiesel writes in first person. His myth is exchanged for a reality when he tells his story of the Holocaust. Many people believe the Holocaust never occurred and by writing in first person Wiesel proves this wrong. Additionally, readers stop to realize that millions of people, just like Wiesel, have suffered and can begin to comprehend their sorrow. There is also a message to the oppressed by writing in first person. He is saying he has survived and seen Hell, but has made it through.

Anonymous said...

I think Elie Weisel chose to write Night in the first person because it helps the reader comprehend the importance of his story. By reading from Weisel's point of view, the reader is able to put themselves in his shoes and better understand his story of surviving the Holocaust. He is able to tell his story and keep it from being forgotten by writing in first person because it explains the thoughts and emotions going on inside of a Jew through this terrible time. If written in third person, the reader would not fully be able to place themselves in his position and feel the pain and emotion related to the Holocaust.

Anonymous said...

"Night" by Elie Wiesel, is most-likely told in the first person so that the reader can have more insight into what the character is trying to portray. The use of the first person helps the reader to actually imagine him or herself in the author's shoes. We are able to picture the character's surroundings in order to better understand the story. If the book was written in third person, it would not be nearly as interesting and the reader wouldn't get the chance to grasp the setting, mood, and plot as if it were real.

Anonymous said...

In the memoir, Night, Wiesel uses first person to help illustrate his adversities throughout the Holocaust. If Wiesel used third person, the book would not clearly portray the deep emotions, suffering, setting etc. in the book. However, writing as a survivor, Wiesel's memoir would reveal the stark reality during the Holocaust - helping the reader understand and empathize with the author at a personal level.

Anonymous said...

I think that Elie Wiesel begins Night with the story of Moshe the Beadle beacause it is the first time he hears about what is going to happen to the Jewish people. I also think that he starts Night with this beacause all the jews are nonchalant about Moshes story becasue they just think he has gone mad, when it is really true and they just dont know it yet.

Anonymous said...

Elie Weisel uses the first person in his book "Night" to help the reader connect with the text. Writing about these horrible events in the first person allows the reader to understand a deaper meaning in what happened to Weisel instead of just reading about them.It also allows the reader to feal Weisel's emotions in a way that cannot be achieved in the third person.

Anonymous said...

I believe that Elie Weisel begins the telling of "Night" with the story of Moshe the Beadle because it is foreboding, and it also gives the reader insight into how the Jewish people were in denial from the Germans' desire to expel them. Moshe's story foreshadows the oppression and grief that the Jews will be faced with later in the book. It also shows how the people were not willing to accept that they were in danger. No matter how hard Moshe tried to tell them, no one believed what he had to say. This also depicts the power that the Germans had over the Jewish people. They could kill dozens of them, and the Jews wouldn't even believe the story of one who survived. I think that their unwillingness to believe aided the Germans in giving them the element of surprise. Since Moshe's story was only the beginning of the book, it also foreshadows that events much more horrifying are still to come.

Anonymous said...

Elie Weisel wrote Night in the first person because of preservation of reality. This is not just a story he is telling, it's a summary of what seemed like a lifetime. By using the first person, the reader is able to actually feel what Weisel felt, not just what he is telling. If he were to write about his experiences in the time of the Holocaust, in the third person the story would seem much less meaningful to the readers and Weisel himself. By writing this story in the first person, the reader is able to feel the emotion behind Weisel's words not just as a character but as an actual person living through these harsh events of reality. By writing in the first person, Weisel can go back and read his own words and come to terms with his cruel and harsh past.

Anonymous said...

I think that Elie Weisel wrote Night in the first person, to help the reader fully understand the extent of suffering that he and the Jewish people went through. By telling the story in the first person, Wiesel emphasizes how bad times were for the Jewish people. If he were to tell the story in the third person, it would not have nearly the impact on the reader that it does when told through the first person. The reader is able to get a first hand look at Wiesel's sufferings through his own eyes. He also lived through the Holocaust, so it only makes sense to write his memoir in the first person. Wiesel also uses the first person to show how important the Holocaust was in history. Without using the first person, Wiesel would not be able to express the severeness of the Holocaust as well as if he did use it.

Anonymous said...

Elie Wisel tells his story in the firs tperson perspective to not only make the experience more dramatic but to put the reader in Elie Wiesels shoes. By writing this novel in 1st person, the reader immediately connects into his life, and becomes more concerned and interested in the chapters of the book. The book would differ if it was in 3rd person, because the reader would not feel as interested in the book if it was not in 1st person. Although people would feel the sense of urgency, readers immediately feel more responsible and attentive of whats happening when they now that this survivor is writing his own experiences. Its his life story.

Anonymous said...

I think that Elie Weisel writes his story in the first person perspective because it makes it more personal and significant in your mind. If it were in the third person, it would be facts, simply stated like in a book. By telling this from his own perspective, Elie is able to actually tell you what he was thinking and remembering at the time. Elie is sharing his memories, not stating facts. Also, if the story was written in the third person, the reader would lose the sense of pain and intimacy that Elie Weisel gives in the first person perspective.

Anonymous said...

The technique of Elie Weisel's writing, which is writing in the first person, really brings out a strong voice from him. Because he puts himself in the shoes of his past, we are able to see and observe what he felt, saw, and went through during the Halocaust. As readers, one can really understand how Elie Weisel felt, because one imagines themselves as if they were in the same situation. Everything could be understood better. If this book were writing in the third person, nothing would be as strong. The reader would not be able to comprehend the writer's intentions through his writing and his thoughts. Elie Weisel really makes an impression on all.

Anonymous said...

Elie Weisel writes Night in the first person for a number of reasons. The two main ones are so that he can connect with the reader, and so that he can make it seem real. If Night was not written in first person, I think it would make the story less emotional, less powerful, and less real. If Elie Weisel did not write in third person, I don't think that it would convey his story well; it would make the story seem like fiction, instead of Elie writing from his own experiences. By reading Night in first person, the readers are able to truly connect with the pain and suffering the Elie Weisel went through.

Anonymous said...

It seems to me that Elie Weisel chooses to re-count his story from the first person as to give the reader a clearer view into what it was really like to experiences these things. Just reading about events in the third person is not nearly as powerful as hearing them told by someone who was really there. And we should all have an idea as to what to Holocaust was like for the people living through-out and how brave they were to never give up. With first person narration, Weisel can include his emotions, thoughts, and fears which are the aspects to the Holocaust not written into history books, and they are in many ways the most powerful.

Anonymous said...

Elie Wiesel begins Night with the story of Moishe the Beadle because Moishe was probably the first person who was effected by the Holocaust who he encountered. The aungish experienced through Moishe shows the rising scale of events to come. To relate to this anguish, Wiesel explains how Moishe was before and after he had been taken away and escaped from the police.
